to survive a zombie apocalypse

Introduction

In recent years, the world has faced a range of problems, including the COVID-19 pandemic, wars, and changes in the social and economic structure that continue to shape the cultural, social, and economic landscape worldwide. However, the situation could potentially worsen. What if a new epidemic emerges that turns people into zombies, or a war between the living and the dead breaks out? In order to determine the safest places in Sweden in the event of a hypothetical zombie apocalypse, we have analyzed various factors across five categories: Vulnerability, Hideouts, Supplies, Safety, and Mobility. Based on our findings, we have been able to identify the safest places in Sweden. Whether you live in Stockholm, Malmö, Gothenburg, or Uppsala - we've got you covered. Therefore, if you don't reside in a safe city, it might be wise to consider the possibility of relocating in the event of a global zombie outbreak.

5 groups of data

We have analyzed six categories of data (Vulnerability, Hideouts, Supplies, Safety, Mobility) and have determined the safest city in Sweden based on the scores in each category.

Markaryd is ranked as the safest place to be.

According to our research, Markaryd tops the list as the municipality with the highest zombie resistance. But what makes this southern district well-equipped to withstand a wave of zombies or prevent their emergence? The district received relatively high scores in all categories (except safety, as we did not find many indicators in this category, so almost all municipalities received low scores). Despite not making it to the top 20 in categories such as vulnerability, supplies, and mobility, they achieved the highest average score of all. These three crucial indicators do not negate the fact that the district is highly rated in terms of hideouts (ranked 3rd). So in the event of a zombie threat, you can easily find a place to hide.

Stay away from Stockholm County.

The nine lowest-ranked municipalities are located in Stockholm County. Among them, Järfälla is at the bottom of the list of 290 municipalities, followed by Tyresö (ranked 3rd), Huddinge (ranked 4th), Botkyrka (ranked 5th), and others. At first glance, this placement of the worst municipalities may seem quite normal since large cities attract many people, thereby increasing the risk of virus spread. However, an interesting discovery is that, except for 2 municipalities (Sundbyberg and Tyresö), all the bottom-ranked places scored quite high in the vulnerability category. As for the other categories, the outlook is not as promising. All municipalities received either average or below-average scores in the other categories. The only exception is the aforementioned Sundbyberg, which ranks third among all municipalities in the supplies category, as well as Salem, which ranked fourth in the vulnerability category.

Stockholm is the capital city.

Although 9 out of the 10 worst municipalities are located in Stockholm County, the capital city itself ranks only 172nd out of 290 on the list. With dismal scores in all categories, the city did not end up at the bottom of the list, thanks only to the safety category, where Stockholm received the highest score among all municipalities. This is due to the large number of police stations, weapons, and tangential indicators. However, if you find yourself in Stockholm during the zombie pandemic, do not rely on protection from the military, the police, or armed neighbors. The 172nd position is certainly not the best, so be mindful of the municipalities located in the south or west.

Head to the south or the Midwest.

It is in these regions that the most resilient municipalities are found. Olofström is also not far from the best-of-the-best, Markaryd. Further north, you'll find Ljusnarsberg, Kumla, and Surahammar gathered. All of these municipalities have good scores in the vulnerability, hideouts, and supplies categories. Considering that they have approximately the same average score in mobility, you can expect to try living in each of them without any unnecessary obstacles.

dology

All data has been collected and processed by Statistics Sweden (SCB). The most recent available data has been used for each data source. Min-max normalization has been applied to index the data sources in question. This method of indexing allows us to convert all types of data into a value between 1-10, where 1 corresponds to the lowest/worst value and 10 corresponds to the highest/best value within these categories. This means that the higher the score an area received, the better it is relative to others. To ensure as precise and representative results as possible, all municipalities lacking data in more than two categories have been excluded from the quality index.
